Pre-conference workshops

Workshop 1
Andy Hockley
Wednesday 20 September 2017
Time: 1000 – 1300 hours

Dealing with Resistance and Managing Conflict

In this half day workshop we will look primarily at ways to manage conflict. Initially we’ll look at managing change and at how and why teachers and other staff resist change. What does resistance look like and what is the best way of overcoming it? From here we will go on to discuss conflict, how it arises, what are its causes and how can we best manage it.

This workshop will feature a combination of case studies, discussion, input, and other activities designed to facilitate discussion. Participants will be encouraged to share their experiences and successes (and failures) in dealing with conflict and change.

Workshop 2
Lindsay Clandfield
Wednesday 20 September 2017
Time: 1400 – 1700 hours

New directions in materials design for teachers

This engaging and very practical workshop will address different aspects of task design and materials creation for language teachers. Using very simple and free tools, we will explore new types of writing activities both in class and online. In the second part of the workshop, we will explore creating effective slideshows for grammar and vocabulary teaching as well as methods for using slides to enhance speaking activities. A common theme across the workshop will be that, although we have access to exciting and attractive new digital tools, much older principles for communicative tasks apply now more than ever.
